Hi! My name is Melissa and I was diagnosed with generalized dystonia in 2020. My symptoms started in 2019 after I went septic due to a kidney infection and subsequently went hypoxic. I went to sleep on Dec 19, 2018, and around 3 am our dog Oakley woke my husband up and my husband found me unresponsive and barely breathing. I started to have constant muscle spasms, and crippling pain, and no one knew what was happening with my body. I used to be a 911 dispatcher until I medically retired in 2020 when my spasms were getting worse and I no longer felt safe having others’ lives in my hands. I have gone through countless medications, therapies, procedures, and treatments with no improvement and decided it was time for deep brain stimulation surgery. I had my DBS surgeries in 2022. I am participating in pet Palooza because DMRF has helped me and so many others with dystonia to get the treatment we need, change legislation for more medical research and let us all know we aren’t alone. I want to raise awareness and funds for dystonia medical research so hopefully one day, there will be a cure. There is still so much we don’t know about dystonia and with your donation, you can help those who currently have it, those who will have it, and those who had dystonia for years to come. Thank you for reading about my story & for your contribution to dystonia medical research.

Throughout February support Daisy, Oakley and Norie and the other pets registered for DMRF’s Dystonia Pet Palooza by making a donation today.
