Dysphagia and Swallowing Strategies

Tara L. Chay is a Speech Language Pathologist and the Rehabilitation Program Coordinator in the Outpatient Rehabilitation Center at Barrow Neurological Institute, Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. She is licensed by the Arizona Department of Health Services and holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Speech-Language Pathology through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Ms. Chay’s expertise includes the evaluation and treatment of individuals with Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, progressive supranuclear palsy, and multisystem atrophy. She treats speech, language, voice, swallowing, and cognitive linguistic disorders and provides training in the incorporation of assistive technologies and augmentative and alternative communication strategies. She is certified in the LSVT-LOUD and SPEAK OUT!® treatment protocols and has training in the use of sEMG techniques for the treatment of dysphagia. Ms. Chay also holds certifications as an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) and as a Multiple Sclerosis Certified Specialist (MSCS). She is an active member of the Barrow Adaptive Technologies task force, the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA), and is a site reviewer and board member for the Committee on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Education (CoARATE). Ms. Chay received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She completed her master’s degree and doctoral coursework in the Department of Communication Disorders at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN.
