Individuals with Dystonia Needed for Brain Function Study

The Center for Neurosciences at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research conducts one of the nation’s leading brain imaging programs directed by neuroscientist, David Eidelberg, MD. The program is internationally recognized for developing new techniques to identify and measure patterns and circuits of brain function in people with disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and dystonia.

What is the Research About?
The study will explore patterns of brain function common among dystonia patients with the hope that this information will one day improve treatment for this disease.

What Does it Involve?
One study visit consisting of:
• Neurological examination (30 min)
• MRI of the brain (1 hr)

Who is Eligible?
Men and women 18 years of age and older with symptoms of isolated/primary dystonia (DYT1, DYT6, sporadic, cervical, blepharospasm, writer’s cramp). Participants must not have any other neurological conditions.

Who is Not Eligible?
Individuals with history of head trauma, stroke, epilepsy, demyelinating disease, congestive heart failure, drug or alcohol dependence, psychiatric illness, surgical therapy for dystonia (e.g., DBS), diagnosis of secondary dystonia (drug or injury induced dystonia), implanted metal devices, dementia. Pregnant or breastfeeding women will be excluded.

Research coordinators can provide detailed information about the program and determine whether you are eligible to participate in a clinical research study. Travel can be arranged and paid for by the study team.
