From the moment I was diagnosed in the mid 1970’s, my parents worked tirelessly to combat dystonia. At the time, patients and their families had no place to turn. My prognosis was a bleak future. Fortunately, lack of hope didn’t reside within my parents’ vocabulary. If there was no way forward, then they would construct a road.
The critical work of the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation (DMRF) depends from the determination of families like mine and the support of friends like you. From the moment the DMRF opened its doors, my parents were an integral part of the Foundation. My dad served as the first Treasurer and his dedication earned him a lifetime position on the Board. My parents’ mission was simple and their contributions far-reaching. They sought a better life for me, in the process touching the lives of hundreds of thousands. Well understanding the toll this debilitating condition levies on the whole family, they evinced a resolve to not only advance medical knowledge but also offer much-needed support to the patients and families who man the front lines every day.
It’s truly an honor to establish The Martin & Roberta Sloate Dystonia Research Fund at the DMRF, a place they called home. Your contribution enables my parents’ legacy to continue and brings hope to everyone struggling with dystonia. Thanks to friends like you, I look forward to a future without dystonia.
