Lina Aghdamilian
My name is Lina Aghdamilian. I’m currently a high school student in California. I had my first symptoms of dystonia at the age of 3. I was walking out of the park with my dad when all of the sudden my leg just stood stuck in place. My parents were worried and didn’t understand what happened to me. After countless doctor visits I was officially diagnosed with DYT11 dystonia at the age of 12.
Dystonia hasn’t stopped me from living a normal life; I socialize with friends and participate in lots of fun activities because I didn’t let dystonia dictate my life. I chose how I wanted to live with it. It taught me a lot and helped me mature mentally on how to deal with things.
Getting DBS in 2021 was one of the most difficult decisions I ever made because there are so many risk factors to it. The surgery was scary and the pain and recovery were difficult, but it was all worth it the end. It gave a me a second chance in life and I was willing to fight through every bit of it. I want to raise awareness for people to be conscious of this condition.
