Dystonia is a Movement Disorder
Joan Miller, MD was a primary care physician in Seattle who developed cervical and limb dystonia following a spinal cord injury. Despite being a physician, Dr. Miller struggled for years before she was referred to a movement disorder specialist and her dystonia symptoms were correctly diagnosed. The Joan Miller Young Investigator Scholarship Award, named in her memory, supports up-and-coming dystonia researchers by providing travel stipends to attend DMRF workshops and meetings. Attending scientific meetings is essential for young clinicians and researchers to establish careers in dystonia because meetings provide opportunities to present their work to an expert audience and to build relationships with leaders in the field. You can read more about Joan in the Summer 2018 issue of Dystonia Dialogue. Generous support allowed young investigators to participate and present at the following meetings:
  • Fourth DMRF Myoclonus Dystonia Workshop, Paris, September 2018
  • DMRF Targeted Drug Discovery for Dystonia, Chicago, November 2018
  • DMRF Medical & Scientific Advisory Committee Meeting, San Antonio February 2019
Applications for travel stipends to attend are being reviewed for the Samuel Belzberg 6th International Dystonia Symposium (IDS6) to be held in Dublin, Ireland with announcement in mid-March.  Future opportunities will be posted as they are available.
