My dog is a 13 year old female yellow lab mix named Sydney*. Sydney was found apparently hit by a car. As a result of the accident she suffered a concussion, broken bones in her snout, the loss of several teeth, and a chunk of her tongue was severed. Lab Rescuers pulled her from the shelter and gave her medical attention. Sydney is one of three rescue dogs my husband and I have adopted. Sydney, despite all she has been through is such a sweet loving, affectionate dog with a zest for life.
I was diagnosed with Dopa-Responsive Dystonia (DRD) Spring 2010. At that time I could not stand, walk, or sit straight up. Over the past year my dystonia continues to spread and has resulted in back and neck pain and significant reduction in mobility. Walking, standing straight, and turning my head are challenges I face on a daily basis, taking an emotional toll on my outlook on life. Through Sydney’s zest for life and her unconditional love I accept and face my challenges with the same zest, knowing life is a special gift and each day should be appreciated and lived to its fullest. Sydney and I have participated in this event the past two years and have found it very rewarding. We are back for a third year to continue to raise awareness and support for dystonia patients and the foundations dedicated research.
* It is with a broken heart that I let you know that Sydney passed away unexpectedly the day I was registering the two of us to participate in this event. After much thought I decided I would still enter with Sydney as my partner. This year we are raising awareness and donations but I am also honoring Sydney for all that she has done to help me over the years and will continue to do in spirit. Sydney I love and miss you so much. You will forever be a part of me.
