Groundbreaking Research to be Presented

Dublin – May 30, 2023 — The Dystonia Medical Research Foundation (DMRF) and Dystonia Europe are pleased to announce the upcoming Samuel Belzberg 6th International Dystonia Symposium, set to take place in Dublin, Ireland, from June 1st to June 3rd, 2023. The Symposium is named in memory of Samuel Belzberg, co-founder of the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, who dedicated himself to advancing the understanding of dystonia and to supporting research that will lead to more improved treatments and ultimately a cure. This global event will bring together leading experts, researchers, and healthcare professionals to share knowledge, foster collaboration, and advance the understanding and treatment of this neurological disorder.

Dystonia is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions that cause abnormal postures or repetitive movements. It affects people of all ages and can have a significant impact on their daily lives. The Samuel Belzberg 6th International Dystonia Symposium aims to provde a platform for attendees to learn about the latest scientific advancements and treatment options available for individuals living with dystonia.

The event is organized by the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, Dystonia Europe, organizations dedicated to funding research, raising awareness, and providing support to individuals affected by dystonia and the Dystonia Coalition, a NIH sponsored clinical research network. The conference will feature a diverse range of presentations and panel discussions led by renowned experts in the field. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions and explore innovative approaches to improve the lives of those affected by dystonia.

“We are thrilled to bring together a multidisciplinary community of researchers, clinicians, and individuals impacted by dystonia for this important symposium,” stated Mark Rudolph, President of the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation. “By fostering collaboration and sharing the latest research and clinical insighs, we aim to accelerate progress in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of dystonia, while actively working towards finding a cure. Our collective efforts will propel us forward on the path to discovering effective solutions and improving the lives of those affected by this challenging condition.”

Groundbreaking research will be presented on 107 scientific posters. Key topics to be covered during the conference include the latest advancements in dystonia research, emerging treatment strategies, neurostimulation techniques, psychosocial support, and patient advocacy, including:

• Current treatments in dystonia
• Dystonia in pediatrics: what can we learn from inherited metabolic disorders?
• Structural imaging of dystonia: modern lesion network mapping
• Deep brain stimulation in humans: What can we learn about etiology?
• Non-motor features of dystonia
• Relationship between dystonia, tremors, Parkinson’s disease, and ataxia

Dystonia is a movement disorder that forces muscles in the body to contract or spasm involuntarily, causing twisting, repetitive, and patterned movements as well as abnormal postures. Cutting across all ages and backgrounds, dystonia may be genetic or caused by factors such as physical trauma, exposure to certain medications, or other neurological conditions. While not fatal, this chronic disorder causes varying degrees of disability and pain, from mild to severe.

The Dystonia Medical Research Foundation is a leading global organization dedicated to advancing research, raising awareness, and providing support to individuals and families affected by dystonia. Established in 1976, the DMRF has been instrumental in driving groundbreaking research initiatives and promoting collaboration among scientists, clinicians, and patients worldwide.
